Backup your Synology in a swiss-datacenter

Are you one of those proud owners of a Synology NAS and wondering
how to backup or sync your important data in a secure place?

This is actually quite easy to accomplish, using reliable and secure Dynamic Storage (Object Storage) from Swisscom. Your data is securely stored in the Swisscom datacenters, in Switzerland, and never leaves the border. 100% Swissness!

What you need:

  • Synology NAS (DSM version 5.x or higher)
  • Synology “Cloud Sync” Package
  • Account on http://developer.swisscom.com
  • Dynamic Storage Service (S3 Object Storage) on http://developer.swisscom.com
  • 10′ to setup

 

Cookbook:

1) Setup a new account…

…or log in to http://console.developer.swisscom.com and add your billing information.

2) If needed create an Org and a Space

3) Create Service

4) Select Dynamic Storage

5) Choose a Service Name

Click on “Goto Service”

6) Create your S3 Account

create a Service Key ( = Account)

7) Copy the account details to your notepad

8) Now log in to your beloved Synology NAS and install Cloud Sync. (You’ll find it in the package center)

9) Start “Cloud Sync” and select S3 Storage (on the 2nd page)

10) Add hostname, access key, and secret key from your notepad, and create a bucket

Note: Try to use a good bucket name. Bucket names are, by definition, unique throughout the entire system, lower case, and perhaps already taken by someone else.

11) Data encryption

If you only want to backup your data, then it might be a good idea to check this box. But if you want to sync your data and also access it with other apps (e.g. s3browser.com), then only unencrypted data can be synced.


 

Sync direction: according to your needs. Bidirectional is default.

 

 

12) Congratulations, you’re done and your data is securely stored in Swisscom’s Dynamic Storage 🙂
