Swisscom adds Telephony Breakout for Microsoft Teams
Today, Microsoft is launching the carrier scenario for "Direct Routing" in Microsoft Teams. As Swisscom we have been in the technology adoption program (TAP) and are proud to announce that we have already implemented a first enterprise customer. A first customer is using the Microsoft online service in conjunction with the Swisscom service on a daily base.
The now available model and technology elements (see the Microsoft announcement from June 28th 2018) enable Swisscom to bring the services to medium and large customers. For small customers (SOHO) we plan to provide a standardized and most probably unmanaged offering in early 2019. In the medium and large enterprise segment we are now looking forward to gain first experiences to adopt the service in usability and scale and plan to integrate it into our existing managed UCC Microsoft offering.
Microsoft Teams Direct Routing is from an architecture point of view a real cloud approach. The needed Session Border Controller (SBC) – in our case managed in a Swisscom Datacenter – connects the cloud service to the Swisscom SIP trunk. Customers do not need infrastructure on their premises anymore. See how the technical architecture looks like:
As Swisscom we believe that the Carrier Model of Teams Direct Routing is a great technology and an opportunity for our customers. Pierre-Luc Marilley who is heading the Swisscom Enterprise Workspace & Collaboration solution center says: “Microsoft Teams Direct Routing is great for us as a service provider. We aim to be THE provider Swiss customers contact for connecting Office 365 and Teams with the telephony network. Our broad offering includes further services to ensure best end-to-end experience”.
We are convinced that companies win in efficiency by communicating with Microsoft Teams and Direct Routing in many scenarios and that further use cases which are including the Skype for Business solutions will propel additional adoption. The start looks promising with more to come soon.
